When you think of two-dimensional platform games, what probably comes to mind are Italian plumbers bouncing off turtles, or a little blue bloke with a cannon on his left arm. Chances are you don’t immediately think of a 19 year old Japanese girl taking down mutant sea creatures with a fishing rod.  If you were Japanese that might be different – the first Umihara Kawase was released in 1994 for the Super Famicom, and had several sequels on different platforms. Sayonara Umihara Kawase, a 2013 title for the Nintendo 3DS, is the first Umihara Kawase game to see a release in the west, albeit only as an eshop and not a physical release. Still, we should be grateful to see such a unique and fun game getting released over here at all!

The game starts without any kind of story – launches you straight into the first stage with a brief but adequate tutorial. The focus of Sayonara Umihara Kawase is its gameplay. You play as a girl working her way through platformer stages. Rather than just jumping from platform to platform, she uses a fishing lure which can be used to swing Spiderman-style round the stages, or to capture the aquatic enemies that roam about in your path. Speaking of the enemies, it’s worth noting that in an otherwise innocuous game they are absolute nightmare fuel: creepy fish with legs, eels that spit shit at you, and the first boss is a giant tadpole which secretes mini-frogs to attack you! Things get progressively more complicated in typical platformer style, with the inclusion of slippery ice blocks which your fishing line won’t stick to, and the platformer staple of instant death-inducing spikes.

The aim of each stage isn’t merely to complete the level, but also to collect Kawase’s backpacks which are scattered about. Often the challenge is not so much working out where they are than mastering the technique of obtaining them. Although it can be annoying repeating the same level seemingly hundreds of times to obtain a backpack just out of reach, it is also oddly compelling: you’ll find yourself spending hours trying to get one craftily placed backpack without quite knowing why I hadn’t given up and thrown the 3DS out the window, as I would have done facing the same challenge in other games.

Now, what could either be seen as the main appeal or drawback of this game is its difficulty. It is VERY hard to control – you’ll want to shoot your fishing line in one direction but end up shooting it the opposite way, and will subsequently fall into the sea below (presumably to be eaten by angry sea creatures seeking revenge for their legged cousins). You will at times want to reach into the 3DS screen and throttle little Kawase for her incompetence. Eventually though you do get the knack, and it’s worth the effort for the unbridled joy you feel when expertly swinging from platform to platform.

The game’s characters are depicted in a cute anime art style, with the usual issue of it only being possible to distinguish a 9 year old character from a 20 year old character by the size of her breasts (ranging from non-existent to obnoxiously huge). The actual gameplay graphics are not mind-blowing, but they get the job done. The game’s soundtrack is nice and relaxing, but not particularly memorable. Worth mentioning is the odd, dreamlike scenery of Sayonara Umihara Kawase. For example, the backgrounds of the first few worlds are composed giant erasers and pencils and floating schools desks; later on are framed pictures of geisha and discarded alcohol bottles. You do feel like the game’s designers must have been under the influence of something when making it, but at least it does all go together to create a weird and relaxing, and distinctly Japanese, experience.

The 3D looks good, but at times becomes distracting. Some puzzle-type games (Pullblox being a particular example) actually benefit from having the 3D turned on, but sadly the action in Sayonara Umihara Kawase is enough that the 3D can actually become a hindrance. As such I found myself keeping it off most of the time.

There are a good range of options. One that is particularly welcome is the ability to change your control scheme. This is very useful as this is the type of game that benefits from a personalised style – after trying the two provided control schemes (Standard and Classic) I ended up opting for a custom button assignment. Some experimentation will be required for each player to work out what’s best for them; some will undoubtedly prefer to just stick with the default. Also worth noting is that, somewhat strangely, in order to use the circle pad you have to go into the options and enable it. It could be that it being left off by default is meant to encourage you to play with the d-pad, which would make sense considering the higher degree of accuracy you’ll achieve with the d-pad.

Other extra features are online rankings for the time taken to complete each level, but you would really need to be a pro to compete (or better than me, at least!). There is also the option to save replays of your having played a level, presumably to show off to your friends how skilfully you navigated a particular platform; a non-essential inclusion, in my opinion, but still a nice little extra. You can also play as different characters with slightly different abilities (such as having checkpoints mid-level) or with their own specific background music, but they again don’t add anything essential to the game.

Something that is sure to put off many gamers is the high price point – currently £19.99 in the eshop. The reason for this high price is that Sayonara Umihara Kawase was a full retail release in Japan, but as a result you’ll need to be sure it’s worth it before you take the plunge. Still, if you’re looking for something to sink your time into mastering, and which provides a real sense of achievement after completing each level, Sayonara Umihara Kawase is worth your money. Its high challenge and weird atmosphere make for a very fun, though occasionally frustrating, gaming experience.
