Schrödinger’s Cat and the Raiders of the Lost Quark Review

Schrodingers Cat and the Raiders of the Lost Quark Review Screenshot 1

For the players who are not quantum physics connoisseurs Schrödinger’s Cat was a theory where a cat is put in a box with a tiny bit of radioactive substance which may decay, this in turn releases a poison which may kill the cat, you would not know whether the cat was dead or alive so in a sense the cat is both dead and alive at the same time until you decide to open the box. Schrödinger’s Cat and the Raiders of the Lost Quark does include a cat that can die but you see that cat die and then it comes back so it’s not really comparable. Hopefully the theory hasn’t dampened your excitement!

The plot concerns itself with a Particle Zoo where families visit to watch subatomic particles in their natural environment. But just like any zoo based story all hell breaks loose and the particles get thrown everywhere. It is up to Schrödinger’s Cat to help the zoo staff get everything under control. Schrödinger’s Cat and the Raiders of the Lost Quark can be described as a puzzling platformer.

As you progress through you come across a variety of quarks. There are four types of quarks who when used in specific combinations generate a skill you can utilise. There are 14 different combinations to play with which range from throwing missiles, creating helicopters to a protective shield. Most of the time the quarks that you require will be found just before an area where a certain skill is required to progress through, for example you come across the sticky goo that ebbs your life away, luckily the quarks needed to create a protective shield will be located just before the goo. There’s a helpful screen information that usually appears informing you of the quark combination required to get past an obstacle.

Schrödinger’s Cat and the Raiders of the Lost Quark is both a puzzle game and a platformer game but it’s just too basic to play. There’s a lot of jumping but no variety whilst the puzzles are simply utilising the quarks in the right way which isn’t difficult because you never run out of quarks. When you input the combination for the helicopter you’ll have a certain length of time to use it, if you haven’t reached your destination then you’ll fall back down but the quarks will reappear so it becomes more trial & error instead of actual puzzling that requires you to plan what you need to do. You’ll end up finding 4 or 5 quark combinations are your favourites and when your given a choice you’ll end up reusing them which is a shame.

The cat in Schrödinger’s Cat and the Raiders of the Lost Quark is reasonably witty throwing out various physics related jokes that mostly fall flat but you will find some funny. Schrödinger’s Cat and the Raiders of the Lost Quark tries to come across as wacky but it just doesn’t feel authentic enough to engage you or get you to reach its level of wackiness.

The story is meant to be bizarre and the dialogue is interesting but lack of involvement you experience filters what you can get out of Schrödinger’s Cat and the Raiders of the Lost Quark. There’s very little replay value in Schrödinger’s Cat and the Raiders of the Lost Quark, once you’ve completed it there’s no reason to go back to it.

Visually Schrödinger’s Cat and the Raiders of the Lost Quark is a mixed bunch. When your using your abilities it’s fun watching the quarks interact as they help you. The level designs feel very retro and subsequently very dated. The cat is very basic in design and there’s no variety in your actions. The quarks whilst cute looking should have more personality about them. The enemies are repetitive and forgettable. Soundtrack wise it doesn’t grate and fits in with the general bizarreness of Schrödinger’s Cat and the Raiders of the Lost Quark. Personal favourite are the quarks noises as you hear them working hard or getting picked up by your character.

Schrödinger’s Cat and the Raiders of the Lost Quark in theory should be a fun and entertaining game but the witty dialogue is lost amongst the bland level design, basic platforming and low-level difficulty.

If you enjoy puzzle games then this isn’t a good one if you enjoy platforming games then again this isn’t a good one. Changing the theory to make it more relevant; Is it possible for a game to be entertaining and not entertaining at the same time? I’m not sure but Schrödinger’s Cat and the Raiders of the Lost Quark definitely falls into the not entertaining category unfortunately.
