Well is Short Peace: Ranko Tsukigime’s Longest Day a game or an animation? That’s the first question that will come to your mind when you start playing.  Short Peace: Ranko Tsukigime’s Longest Day serves as a video game tie-in to Katsuhiro Otomo’s four-part anime compilation film project. The four animated shorts are Possessions, Combustible, Gambo and A Farewell to Weapons. This is a games review so I wont go into detail about the films but if you enjoy the genre then you’ll enjoy the films.

Short Peace: Ranko Tsukigime’s Longest Day can be best described as a side scrolling beat-em-up. You move to your right defeating a range of foes who are trying to slow you down, if you happen to get slowed down then the left hand side of the screen has a tendency to get very dark, if you don’t get away fast enough then you will succumb to the evil spirits! There are various cut scenes which are essentially the anime movies moving the plot along. Short Peace: Ranko Tsukigime’s Longest Day is not a complicated game, besides jumping, running and slicing through opponents at high speed there really isn’t much else to get to grips with. There’s a lot of style on offer but from the beginning it definitely feels likes style over substance.

There are only 10 or so stages to run through, you could probably complete Short Peace: Ranko Tsukigime’s Longest Day in little over an hour. There’s lots of explosions and vivid colours all over the screen. The preboss enemies put up very little in terms of a defense, when you hit them they explode in a series of pixels in a sort of domino effect as the enemies behind get hit my their fallen predecessors pixilations. The boss levels are a tad more entertaining, you have to slightly vary your tactics for example the motorcycle section is probably most enjoyable experience. The bosses as you would expect are a weird and very boldly detailed bunch but again it’s not very interesting which is unfortunately a recurring issue with Short Peace: Ranko Tsukigime’s Longest Day.

Being a side scrolling game Short Peace: Ranko Tsukigime’s Longest Day is a very linear game. Sure there are a few alternative routes you can take but it’s essentially giving you a choice of moving right by either taking a higher or lower route, the one thing going for Short Peace: Ranko Tsukigime’s Longest Day is that it’s short and not at all worth thinking about. The only longevity Short Peace: Ranko Tsukigime’s Longest Day has is once you’ve completed the game in an hour or so you can go back and try to better your high score, not really something you’ll want to do again. The extras are basic i.e. the usual concept art which pales in comparison to the film animations on offer.

Short Peace: Ranko Tsukigime’s Longest Day is a poor game interspersed with anime stories that are interesting in their own right. However as a game which is beautifully drawn and represented in the traditional anime style the actual bits which you play are pretty boring and very easy. You almost feel like you are part of an interactive movie but the interactive parts are the least interesting which is a shame as that’s the part which should mean Short Peace: Ranko Tsukigime’s Longest Day should become a more involving experience but sadly it’s not.
