It was coming to the end of August, but Ratalaika Games still managed to get one more release out in the form of Mekabolt. Just like numerous other Ratalaika Games, the time to get the Platinum trophy in Mekabolt is very short but hopefully this is one of those independent titles that makes you want to continue playing long after the Platinum trophy has been unlocked.
Generally Ratalaika Games are releasing titles which you could argue are on the simplistic side and the same reasoning can be applied to Mekabolt. You take on the role of a theme park technician that needs to collect a lot of batteries to fix the robots that have decided to stop following orders. With your very useful Mekabolt, you will be able to control the actions of these robots to help you assist you in your goal of reaching the much needed batteries. Mekabolt is a basic platformer where you jump around the smallish levels manipulating both robots and scenery to gain access to the battery that is located on a level, when the battery is collected you can then move onto the next level.
There are 100 levels to contend with, split across 4 stages. The similarities between Mekabolt and a more recent title like Gravity Duck or Hoggy 2 can be easily seen. Where Gravity Duck and Hoggy 2 relied on a gravity mechanic to manipulate levels, Mekabolt has a gun of sorts doing the same thing. Most of the levels within Mekabolt are fairly easy to get through requiring no more than a few interactions to reach the battery required to complete the level. The unique part of Mekabolt is that your mekabolt weapon/instrument is able to affect the way robots move.
For example shooting a generic jumping robot will paralyze it, when you jump on it you will be able to access higher platforms, if you shoot a projectile producing robot then that will change the direction it is facing, it’s projectiles may then strike some of the destructible blocks that might be blocking your way. There are some slightly more dangerous manipulations you have to perform, such as hitting a spike weapon that shoots out a spike when hit and you only have one life, so you need to time your shot correctly, if you don’t you die, if you do then the spike will hit a wall turning into a step to a previously unreachable area. There are also the standard fire and spike obstacles, these are all very easy to see and just as easy to bypass.
Graphically Mekabolt follows the same suit as Gravity Duck and Hoggy 2, it goes down the cute 2D 8bit graphics route. The enemies in Mekabolt are a pretty standard fare, with slight alterations as you move into the next area i.e. there’s a jumping robot who’s fairly easy to control in the first stage, in the second stage a spike comes out of it making it a little harder but nothing taxing. Musically it’s the usual generic platforming sounds, they don’t grate but the experience would be the same if you turned the sound off completely. Unfortunately for Mekabolt there were no Boss levels,when you complete the last level on a stage you just move onto the next stage. It’s the same with the plot, there’s barely any after the initial few lines of dialogue at the start.
Mekabolt is a reasonable platformer that contains a very easy to acquire Platinum trophy. There are plenty more enjoyable and challenging platform games available but if you want an easy game to complete in less than a couple of hours, then Mekabolt will tick that box for you. The colourful visuals and basic levels can’t hide the fact that Mekabolt lacks a fair bit of depth and it does get repetitive quite quickly but you won’t care when you unlock that shiny Platinum trophy to add to your collection.

The theme park is in trouble and your Mekabolt is the only thing that can fix it!
