Kinect Sesame Street TV Review

Man, if only Kinect Sesame Street TV had been released when I was a kid. I’m 30 now (yikes!) and this type of experience obviously isn’t aimed at me, but by God, it’s easy, even to someone like me who doesn’t have kids, to see just how successful a job Soho Productions have done here.

While not a game in the traditional sense, for kids under the age of 10, you’re unlikely to find a more enjoyable, educational or, flat out old fashioned, sweet natured experience on the 360. Kinect may have its faults, and it’s clearly not suited to traditional ‘core’ gaming experiences, but for something of this ilk, Kinect, and its still relatively impressive tech, is all but perfect.

More of an interactive TV show than a videogame, Kinect Sesame Street TV is set over two discs that are split into numerous episodes and different educational themes. On top of that, you also get a downloadable pass for Season 1 shows on the downloadable app on Xbox Live. For £20 odd, needless to say, you’re getting a fair bit of bang for your buck. Of course, that would all count for naught if the episodes weren’t fun, but believe me, young children are going to love this, and if you’re a parent, you’re going to love the positive reinforcement and entertainingly framed education that this package delivers in spades.

Most of the content is obviously based on the most current incarnation of the show, but there are some nice nods to classic Sesame Street for watching (or partaking) gorwn-ups, and besides, the characters are much the same as they have always been, and more importantly, Sesame Street is as charming as you remember. With Big Bird, the troublingly addicted Cookie Monster and the painfully adorable Elmo et al all present and accounted for, Kinect Sesame Street TV is exactly what you would hope for from an interactive version of the TV show, and with Kinect able to accurately read voice commands and all of the basic movements required to progress from one scene to the next, this is the first game of its type (and there have been many down the years) to feel genuinely interactive.

Rather than timed responses, Kinect Sesame Street will actually respond to your specific actions. Be it verbally answering a question or throwing the correct number of coconuts into a box, everything about this, well, it just works. From the street itself to the sheer insanity of Elmo’s World, a place where education is momentarily jettisoned in favour of madness (but in a good way), Kinect Sesame Street is a consistently good looking, slick and easy to use experience. The littlest of little ‘uns may need a gentle prod in the right direction every so often, but for the most part, this is easy to understand, child friendly fun.

It’s obviously aimed at a very specific demographic, but if you’ve got a toddler in tow, Kinect Sesame Street TV stands as one of the most lovingly crafted experiences on 360 and a true testament to the strengths of Kinect. It may not be a game in the traditional sense of the world, but if you want to keep your kids entertained, and maybe even have them learn a thing or two along the way, you won’t go far wrong with Kinect Sesame Street TV.
