Magic & Might: Duel of Champions Forgotten Wars is an online strategy card game that has been around a long time. This is Ubisoft’s first try at producing a Duel of Champions game for a console. There’s been various card games that have turned into games or started off as games with varying degrees of success because the games are usually simplistic in design but complicated once you get deep into it. You could argue the simplest card game would be Solitaire or Snap, once you start adding numbers and special abilities to a card game it does get more interesting but you’re still going to be playing a card game. Can Magic & Might: Duel of Champions Forgotten Wars be more than a sum of its parts or will it be engaging enough to keep you wanting to play? That is the question.

The is a single player campaign which is made up of a 30 mission campaign follows the story of the Forgotten Wars. If you complete a campaign then you unlock various bonuses. Though it’s hard to buy into a card turn based campaign mode at the best of times, Magic and Might: Duel of Champions Forgotten Wars does a decent job of it.

As you become a more experienced and hopefully a better player you’re able to build more tactical decks so to make most of your additional experience over other players. There’s a ranked multiplayer which is where you’ll be able to play other players, but this didn’t contain too many players the last time I checked. There is not a great deal to do besides playing the computer or someone else, so Magic and Might: Duel of Champions Forgotten Wars is lacking quite a bit in terms of options and modes to keep you interested beyond the card based battling.

The battling is reasonably involving at the start, you can play spell cards, attack cards etc. You will need to plan 3/4 steps ahead quite early on in the game otherwise you’ll find yourself losing a lot of games as soon as you start. The spell cards should be easier to read, sure you’ll recognise the pictures but at the start you will keep on having to zoom in to know what the card does, it should be easier to navigate to this information.

An annoying part of Magic and Might: Duel of Champions Forgotten Wars is the amount of money which appears Ubisoft expect you to pay to get the most out of the game. You win gold after a battle which can be spent in ‘Emilio’s Deal’, a sort of card trader. You have a enough usually to buy some uncommon cards but you are expected to pay for the special cards or vastly improved decks. So if you’re willing to pay then you will be able to buy the best cards at a much earlier stage which obviously gives you an unfair advantage against someone who chooses not to buy any cards.

A game like Magic and Might: Duel of Champions Forgotten Wars needs to look good considering the fairly basic premise i.e. use a card to battle another card. The cards are gloriously detailed and the general artwork during the battle arena is very pleasing to the eyes. The rest of Magic and Might: Duel of Champions Forgotten Wars is distinctively average. You don’t see a battle as such when you play a card, just various positive and negative numbers appearing over the battlefield. Magic and Might: Duel of Champions Forgotten Wars has reasonable sound, obviously it’s limited due to the nature of the game but they could have done a lot more with it to try to engage with the player.

Magic and Might: Duel of Champions Forgotten Wars is a decent game but to make it a more interesting and more engaging title it needs to have a lot more functionality, there needs to be a training mode to improve the cards you already have, the emphasis shouldn’t be on buying your way to the top, the battles should be more explosive, the story should be more involving and simply it wouldn’t take much to make Magic and Might: Duel of Champions Forgotten Wars a more likeable game.

If you like battling card games then you will find some enjoyment from Magic and Might: Duel of Champions Forgotten Wars but there’s not enough to keep you playing on for too long because there are lots of better games. Unfortunately for Magic and Might: Duel of Champions Forgotten Wars there is no ace in it’s pack and is an average deck at best.
