The Book of Unwritten Tales 2 Review

Nordic Games brings characters, magic and fun to life in The Book of Unwritten Tales 2, a fantasy puzzle game and sequel. With brilliant humour, gameplay and story, this game brings to life a world that makes you want to stay in it for as long as you possibly can. You play as four main protagonists as you experience your adventure in Aventasia: Wilbur the gnome mage, Ivo the elf princess, Critter the alien and Nate the human.

This puzzle game is fun for any age and gives a wonderful story to the point and click adventure. The game’s main idea is that you walk around as one of the four aforementioned characters trying to figure out puzzles (eg. How to escape your bedroom in the castle as Ivo at the beginning of the game.) and while this may seem like it could get tedious, especially as the puzzles increase in difficulty, the game’s brilliant and humorous script writing, immersive voice acting and stunning graphics makes you want to explore every corner.

The plot is very well thought out and in my eyes just can’t be faulted, introducing each character one by one and making us fall in love almost instantly with each one of them before they’re all brought together for a spectacular finale to an equally spectacular story as they all try to save Aventasia from the magical forces that are turning beasts into puppies and castles into dollhouses. Of course, personally I’d prefer a puppy over a beast any day but anyway…

The graphics of The Book of Unwritten Tales 2 are striking and add so much to the games overall greatness. The colours used are vibrant, the scenes are always very detailed and it makes you feel like you are actually living through a story book, so the developers have most definitely done a great job with making this game as beautiful as they could have.

The audio through the game is pretty decent too. While some sound effects are, unfortunately, quite repetitive that’s outweighed by the soundtrack and the voice acting which both bring so much more life to the world of the game that you can’t help but overlook the minor problems like repetitive sounds.

For a game that was originally funded by a Kickstarter campaign I have to give them credit. The developers have done exceedingly well to make a game that I believe passes the first Book of Unwritten Tales and what I love most about it is that I know both a child and a fully grown adult would both be thrilled to be able to play a game such as this which frankly just doesn’t happen very often any more. So many games these days just can’t pander to a younger demographic as well as an older one and while we do have games such as Minecraft and Super Smash Bros. that are great for younger audiences, I think The Book Of Unwritten Tales is definitely one of those that is great for everyone.

Overall, you should definitely try The Book Of Unwritten Tales 2. It’s witty, it’s fun and it’s visually stunning and if that’s not something to get excited about then I don’t know what is.
